How to Improve Your Emotional Intelligence (For Career Success)

Author: Shadé Zahrai

Emotional intelligence is a crucial aspect of performance, but sometimes it can be complicated to find the path to it. So, in this video, Shadé Zahrai shared three strategies that can help individuals enhance this important skill. Emotional intelligence involves understanding, utilizing, and managing one's own emotions, as well as the ability to recognize and manage the emotions of others. In today's world, where interactions with co-workers, team members, managers, and clients are constant, understanding how people think, feel, and process information is essential for positive and productive interactions.

Leaders with high emotional intelligence create engaged, inspired teams that end up performing better. There are some strategies to apply when a person seeks to get involved in this improvement.

o The first strategy is to become better at identifying one's own emotional state. This involves understanding and recognizing feelings in different situations and being aware of the mental and physical responses that occur during those moments. Being able to differentiate between high and low-intensity positive and negative emotions is essential. By understanding the triggers and sources of emotions, individuals can create solutions. It is important to note that there are no good or bad emotions, only reactions to them.

o The second strategy is seeking to understand the emotional states of others. This involves paying attention to nonverbal cues, tone of voice, and other expressions to gain insight into others' emotional states and motivations. Taking on their perspective and seeing the world through their perspective fosters deeper connections and understanding.

o The third strategy focuses on improving social and professional relationships by becoming aware of nonverbal communication cues and managing one's own expressions. Bringing humor into stressful situations can help relieve tension and change the perception of conflict into an opportunity for personal growth that can lead to more constructive resolutions.

By practicing these emotional intelligence strategies, individuals can position themselves for career advancement and leadership opportunities.

Finally, due to my plan to venture into and start a new business in Canada, and based on these useful strategies, I would like to learn more about nonverbal communication, so I will better interpret and respond to the unspoken messages of others, allowing me to negotiate and interact more effectively. Additionally, I recognize the importance of managing my own expressions such as body language, and tone of voice which can unconsciously communicate my true thoughts and feelings, even when I may not intend to do so. By investing time and effort into developing these skills, I am confident that I will be able to build stronger commercial bonds and provide exceptional service to my clients and suppliers not only in my current business but also in the one that I would like to start in the future. Therefore, I think that understanding and effectively managing emotions, both one's own and those of others, is essential for growth and success.
